Arrive and register address
If staying more than 90 days, register at your ward office (区役所) within 14 days of arrival. Get your Residence Card.

Important Restrictions
Cannot work for Japanese companies
Your income must come from overseas employers or clients. Working for a Japanese company on this visa is illegal.
Maximum 6 months — no extension
You must leave Japan after 6 months. You can re-enter after a period outside Japan, but continuous stay is limited.
No access to Japanese national health insurance
You must maintain your own private international health insurance throughout your stay.
No direct path to PR
Digital Nomad Visa time does NOT count toward the 10-year PR requirement. To stay long-term, you need a different visa type.
Family members can join
Spouse and children can accompany you on dependent status, but they also cannot work for Japanese employers.
💡 Yamada Hack: The DN Visa Bridge Strategy
Use the Digital Nomad Visa as a scouting trip, not a permanent solution. Spend 6 months in Japan, find a Japanese employer who will sponsor an Engineer visa, then apply from inside Japan before your DN visa expires. Many tech companies in Tokyo are actively hiring remote workers and offering visa sponsorship. Key areas to job-hunt: Tokyo (Shibuya/Shinjuku tech hubs), remote-first Japanese startups, and international companies with Japan offices.
