Quick guide by visa type

SSW (特定技能)→ Japan Post Bank

Your employer is required to help with daily life support including banking. Ask them to accompany you.

Student (留学)→ Japan Post Bank or 7 Bank

Bring your student ID and enrollment certificate (在学証明書). Most banks accept students.

Dependent (家族滞在)→ Japan Post Bank

Bring your own zairyu card. Some banks ask about income source — explain you receive support from your spouse or parent.

Engineer / Specialist (技術・人文)→ Any bank

Employment letter helps. After 6 months, MUFG and SMBC are accessible.

Working Holiday→ Japan Post Bank or Shinsei

Shinsei Bank is known to be foreigner-friendly for Working Holiday visa holders.

Long-term resident / Permanent resident→ Any bank
