Filipino Healthcare Workers in Japan

Japan urgently needs nurses and care workers. Filipinos are among the most in-demand healthcare workers in Japan — and there are TWO official pathways to work here legally.

Two Pathways: EPA vs SSW Care

ItemEPA (Economic Partnership Agreement)SSW Care
Who can applyFilipino nurses and care workers onlyAny nationality
Slots per year~200-300 (very limited)Unlimited
Language required12 months Japanese training (free)JLPT N4 + Care Japanese Exam
Processing time1-2 years3-6 months
Salary200,000-280,000 yen/month180,000-250,000 yen/month
Time limit3 years (extendable if pass exam)5 years total (SSW1)
Family allowedNoNo (SSW1)
Path to PRYes (if pass national exam)Yes (via SSW2)

💡 Yamada Hack: Apply for BOTH simultaneously. EPA is prestigious but competitive. SSW Care is faster with more slots. Many Filipinos come via SSW Care first, then upgrade later.

Pathway 1: EPA (Economic Partnership Agreement)

The JPEPA (Japan-Philippines Economic Partnership Agreement) is the ONLY pathway where Filipino nurses and care workers get full government support and free language training.

Who Can Apply for EPA

For Nurses: Filipino registered nurse (PRC license), at least 2 years nursing experience, willing to take Japan nursing board exam within 3 years.

For Care Workers: Filipino care worker with relevant training/experience, willing to take Japan care worker national exam within 3 years.

EPA Application Timeline

Phase 1: Apply to DMW (February-April each year)

Phase 2: Screening interview (1-2 months)

Phase 3: Japanese training in Philippines — 6 months, FREE, with daily allowance

Phase 4: Arrive in Japan and continue Japanese training — 6 more months

Phase 5: Work full-time while preparing for national exam

Phase 6: National exam in Year 3 — pass to stay, fail = must return

EPA National Exam

Nurses: Japan nursing board exam (kokka shiken) — held every February

Care workers: Kaigo fukushishi exam — held every January

Pass rate for EPA Filipinos: approximately 50-60% for nurses

Warning: If you fail the exam after 3 years, you must return to Philippines. Focus on Japanese from day one.
