Spouse Visa Japan — What It Is

If you are a Filipino married to a Japanese citizen, you can live in Japan on a Spouse or Child of Japanese National residence status (日本人の配偶者等). This is one of the most favorable visas in Japan — no restriction on work, no sector limitations, and a direct path to permanent residency.

Requirements — Documents You Need

Documents from Philippines (your side)

  • PSA-authenticated Marriage Certificate
  • DFA Apostille on Marriage Certificate
  • PSA-authenticated Birth Certificate
  • Valid Philippine passport
  • NBI clearance
  • Proof of relationship (photos together, chat history, travel together)
  • Proof of financial capacity (your bank statements if you work)

Documents from Japan (spouse's side)

  • Japanese spouse's Family Registry (戸籍謄本) — from city hall
  • Japanese spouse's Certificate of Residence (住民票)
  • Japanese spouse's income proof: tax certificate (課税証明書) + employer certificate
  • Explanation letter about how you met and relationship history

Application Form

  • Application for Certificate of Eligibility (在留資格認定証明書) Form — downloaded from moj.go.jp

Step-by-Step Application Process

Step 1: Japanese Spouse Applies for COE in Japan

Your Japanese spouse (or you, if already in Japan legally) applies for a Certificate of Eligibility at the local Immigration Bureau (出入国在留管理局) in Japan.

Required: All documents listed above.

Processing time: 1-3 months

Cost: Free

Step 2: Receive COE and Send to Philippines

After COE is issued, the original is sent by international courier (DHL, FedEx) to you in Philippines.

Step 3: Apply for Visa at Japanese Embassy Manila

With COE in hand, apply for your visa at:

Embassy of Japan, 2627 Roxas Boulevard, Pasay City

Tel: (02) 8551-5710

Documents for visa application:

  • COE original
  • Your passport
  • Visa application form
  • Passport photos
  • Marriage certificate

Processing: 5-7 business days

Fee: Approximately PHP 1,200

Step 4: Arrive in Japan and Register

Within 14 days of arrival:

  • Register address at ward office (区役所)
  • Receive your Residence Card

Proof of Genuine Relationship — This is Critical

Immigration carefully checks that the marriage is genuine (not a fake marriage for visa purposes). Prepare strong relationship proof:

  • Photos together (different occasions, different years)
  • Chat history (LINE, WhatsApp, Facebook — screenshots)
  • Travel records together (boarding passes, hotel receipts)
  • Video call logs
  • Gifts sent to each other (receipts, shipping records)
  • Visits to each other's countries (passport stamps)
  • Knowledge of each other's family, home, daily life

Write a detailed relationship history explaining: when and how you met, how your relationship developed, why you decided to marry.

Special Situations

Married in Philippines (not in Japan)

Most common case. Your PSA marriage certificate is the main document. Must be apostilled by DFA.

Married in Japan

Your marriage is registered in Japan's family registry (戸籍). Your spouse gets a copy of the updated family registry showing the marriage.

Long-Distance Marriage (never lived together yet)

Still possible but Immigration scrutinizes more. Provide extensive proof of ongoing contact and visits.

Previous Marriage (either party divorced)

Provide divorce certificate (PSA authenticated + apostille) proving previous marriage is legally ended.

After Getting Spouse Visa — Work Rights

On spouse visa, you can:

  • Work any job (no restriction on sector or hours)
  • Start your own business
  • Take any part-time or full-time position
  • Work in any prefecture

This is completely different from SSW or student visa. No 28-hour limit. No sector restriction.

Path to Permanent Residency

With spouse visa, you can apply for PR after:

  • 3 years of marriage to Japanese citizen AND
  • 1 year of continuous residence in Japan

This is much faster than the standard 10-year PR route for other visa holders.

FAQ

Q: What if my Japanese spouse and I fight and separate temporarily? Does my visa get cancelled?

A: Not immediately. However, if divorce is filed, you have a limited time to switch to another visa status or leave Japan. Notify Immigration of any changes in marital status.

Q: Can I bring my child from Philippines (from previous relationship)?

A: Yes, but the child needs their own visa. If your Japanese spouse legally adopts the child, the child gets Japanese nationality. Otherwise, the child can come on dependent visa.

Q: My Japanese spouse is working overseas. Can I still live in Japan on spouse visa?

A: Yes, as long as you are legally married. The spouse does not need to be physically in Japan.

Q: How long is the spouse visa valid initially?

A: Usually 1 year for first-time applicants. After renewal showing stable marriage, you may get 3 or 5 years.
